How to play Roulette

Introduction

Roulette is a very popular online casino game in Canada, because it is easy to play, and can earn you big winnings, if you are lucky. Still, if you’re going to play, it’s best that you’ll learn about the game and the odds. We offer you this article so you can master the rules and get familiar with different variation of the game. Let’s go!

Rules of the game

The rules are pretty straightforward. You have a wheel with 37-38 pockets with numbers and a board, on which you place your bets. With each spin of the wheel the player can wager on a single number or a group of numbers. When the ball lands on a number you either win or lose. The dealer collects the losing bets and award the winners.

There is a minimum bet amount which is usually clearly indicated. You can bet on as many options as you wish. As a common practice, bets that involve fewer numbers are riskier, but have higher payouts, while betting on many numbers have lower risks but also much lower payouts.

Types of Bets

In roulette you have inside bets and outside bets. Inside bets are more risky, which means you have less chances to win, but if you do, you’ll get a much higher payout. The outside bets are the opposite – you are more likely to win, but when you do, you get a lower payout.

Inside bets are Straight-Up (betting on an individual number), Split (betting on two adjoined numbers), Street or a Row (betting on three number row, such as 7, 8, 9), Corner or Quad (placed on four numbers connected by a corner), Basket or First Five (00, 0, 1, 2, 3 – only in American version), and Double Street (bet on two rows or six numbers)

Outside bets include Even/Odd (which covers all 18 even or odd numbers), Red/Black (which covers all 18 red or black space numbers), High/Low (Low covers number 1-18, and high covers numbers 19-36), Columns (there are 3 columns with 12 numbers each, so that covers about third of the board), and Dozens (the first dozen covers numbers 1 to 12, the second covers numbers 13 to 24 and the third covers numbers 25-36).

Roulette Variations

American Roulette: The wheel has both 0 and 00 pockets, which brings the total number of pockets to 38, and brings the house edge approximately to 5%

European Roulette: Was similar to American roulette in the 18th and 19th centuries, but afterwards the 00 pocket was removed, and only 37 pockets remained. The change lowered the house edge to 2.7%.

French Roulette: This type of roulette reduces the house edge even more with special rules applied to a single 0 pocket of the European roulette. For example you have the La Partage rule, when a player gets half his money back every time the ball lands on 0, which brings the house edge to 1.35%.
